Public administration minister and former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam died in a Bangkok hospital on Thursday night.
He was 67.
Prime Minister’s Office press wing confirmed his death.
The politician was suffering from lung cancer for which he was undergoing treatment in Thailand.
Four days after being elected a member of parliament of the 11th parliament, Syed Ashraful breathed his last at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok around 9:45pm, said AL leader Anwarul Kabir, reports UNB.
Syed Ashraf, son of national leader and Bangabandhu’s close associate Syed Nazrul Islam, left behind one daughter and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina and president Abdul Hamid in separate condolence messages expressed deep shock at the death of Syed Ashraful, a member of the AL’s presidium.
He was elected an MP from Kishoreganj-1 constituency in Sunday’s election.
He was made the party’s general secretary in 2009 and served for two consecutive terms till 2018.
On 18 September, the parliament approved 90 days’ leave for ailing Ashraful.
