Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam after an internal investigation found evidence of what the party described as “moral misconduct.”
The decision came after videos showing the MP in intimate moments with a woman went viral on social media. While Gazi Nazrul said the woman is his second wife and claimed they married with the consent of his first wife, Jamaat’s investigation concluded that the two had met privately before marriage, which the party said violated its code of conduct regarding gender interaction.
The party has decided to notify the Election Commission of his expulsion. However, it remains legally unclear whether he will automatically lose his parliamentary seat, as Bangladesh’s Constitution does not explicitly state that expulsion from a political party vacates an MP’s seat.
Meanwhile, an attempted murder case has also been filed against Gazi Nazrul and four others by his former driver, who alleges he was assaulted after objecting to the relationship and being suspected of leaking the videos. The allegations are now under police investigation.
