How to solve Dhaka traffic congestion problem

Two transportation experts from BUET, Professors Moazzem Hossain and Hadiuzzaman, have offered six key recommendations to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka. Their advice was given during a meeting with the interim government’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and senior officials. The immediate actions proposed include banning slow-moving vehicles like rickshaws from major roads, and enhancing traffic signal systems.

For long-term solutions, they suggested consolidating all bus services under a single company to streamline operations. They emphasized that metro rail, along with well-organized bus routes, could handle 70% of the city’s transportation needs. The experts also advised creating dedicated lanes for buses, ensuring only buses use main roads, while slow vehicles serve smaller streets, linking them to metro stations.

Experts  suggestion of forming a bus management company under the government but operated privately to ensure efficiency, with the projected cost being around BDT 6,000 crore for this infrastructure improvement.
